To train or not to train ... That is the question

My sister, Cindy, gave Joshua a present on Monday night after my prenatal fitness class ... a potty book for boys.

It got me thinking ...

When is the best time to toilet train a little boy?

Joshua is 16 months old which, to me, is a little young. Yet, I have also read some books that say it's easier to get it done before they turn 2 and no longer want to do anything that Mommy or Daddy say.

Joshua knows when he's going poo and will come up and tell me he went and then walk into his bedroom and wait for me by the change table, but I don't think this is quite 'potty-ready' behaviour. I used to be a firm believer in 'wait until they're ready' but then I might have 2 babies in diapers for quite a while yet. On the other hand, I've heard that children often digress when a new sibling is born so maybe it's not worth it to even try at this point ...

What do you think?

I speak from experience...NOT!!!!Ben is 31 months old and has used the potty for pee pee three times. I read not to push them. He started screaming no when I showed him the potty. Maybe you have something when you say start them before the NO! starts...too late for me:( I've read that their ready when they can tell you what they are doing...maybe you can help me more than I can help you...any ideas for Ben?

Don't push the issue but don't avoid it either. We've been working on toilet training for 2 years and I don't expect him to be fully and completely trained (ie. out of pullups) until age four. Even when they're almost trained, there are still the days that they're busy playing and don't notice that they need to go.

Have you tried anything yet? I haven't gone through it with Owen yet, but I have heard that it is easier to start in the sumemr as the kids have less clothes to have to take off when they are ready. I remember when my younger brothers were being potty trained, and once they told my Mm they had to go to the bathroom, my Mom had about 10 seconds to get them in teh bathroom, stripped, and on teh potty or it was too late. If you have a bunch of layers to take off, it will be more difficult for you.

So, I'd suggest, if you don't think Josh is readsy (and you can ask him if he wants to try the big potty), that wait until next summer.

I'm planning on starting with Owen next summer - he'll be 1.5 years old. But if he doesn't want to, or if it just isn't happening, than I'll wait until the following summer. Just like everything else, it's not worth worrying over it. It'll happen when it happens.

Well, I started trying this morning and nothing happened but he did sit nicely on the potty for about 10 minutes saying 'poop' while I read him a story. And he wanted to sit on the big potty for a while too so maybe I'll just have to start him on the real toilet and scrap his little chair (he likes to play with it more than use it anyway). :P

I don't think we'll actually start the toilet training now but, as my cuosin Heather suggested, we'll just get him confortable with the toilet so he'll be more ready next time.
